An IP Address is similar to a phone number, but for your computer.
It is an unique number for your computer so other computers connected
to your computer are able to find it.
If your computer is connected
to a network, your computer's IP Address may be automatically supplied
by a server/router, or it can also be manually
assigned.
There are 2 types of IP Addresses:
The first type is the Public IP
Address that is assigned when you connect to the internet. Your
Internet Service Provider (ISP) will automatically supply your
computer with this IP Address. This address is the number that
other computers see when they send data to you across
the internet, eg. Web Pages, E-Mails
& Files.
The second type is the Private IP
Address. If your computer
is connected to a network this address is used to connect to other
computers on the network.
To see your Private IP Address, click "Start", and click "Run...".
the type "cmd" (in Windows 2000/XP) or "command" (in Windows 95/98/ME)
and press Enter.
Then type "ipconfig" in the box that appears and press Enter. This
will display the IP Address of each network adapter in you computer.
